Washington Gas Tax Increases Again on July 1: What Drivers and Businesses Need to Know

Beginning July 1, 2026, Washington drivers will once again pay more at the pump as the state’s fuel tax increases under legislation approved during the 2025 legislative session. While the increase may appear modest on a per-gallon basis, it comes at a time when fuel prices remain among the highest in the nation, creating additional financial pressure for households and businesses alike.

New Fuel Tax Rates

The state gasoline tax will increase by 1.1 cents per gallon, rising from 55.4 cents to 56.5 cents. Diesel fuel will also see an increase, with the state diesel tax climbing from 58.4 cents to 59.5 cents per gallon.

These state taxes are collected in addition to the existing federal fuel taxes of:

  • 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline
  • 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel

Following this adjustment, Washington will continue to have one of the highest state fuel tax rates in the country.

Why the Tax Is Increasing

The increase is the result of a transportation funding package approved in 2025 that not only raised fuel taxes but also requires annual inflation adjustments moving forward. This year’s increase represents the first automatic adjustment under that law.

The goal of the legislation is to help fund transportation projects and maintain the state’s infrastructure as construction and maintenance costs continue to rise.

Revenue Challenges Continue

Despite higher tax rates, Washington is expected to collect less transportation revenue than previously anticipated. Several factors are contributing to this trend, including:

  • Reduced gasoline consumption as vehicles become more fuel efficient.
  • Continued growth in electric and hybrid vehicle ownership.
  • Lower-than-expected fee collections.
  • Ongoing uncertainty surrounding future federal transportation funding.

At the same time, the cost of maintaining roads, bridges, and transportation infrastructure continues to increase, creating additional pressure on the state’s transportation budget.

Fuel Prices Remain High

Washington drivers are already paying some of the highest fuel prices in the United States. The tax increase comes on top of elevated retail fuel prices, meaning many motorists may notice even higher costs during their daily commutes and summer travel.

Commercial trucking companies, delivery services, contractors, and businesses that operate vehicle fleets may feel an even greater impact as diesel prices continue to rise.

Businesses Should Plan for Higher Operating Costs

While a one-cent increase may not seem significant for a single fill-up, the costs can accumulate quickly for businesses that rely on transportation every day.

Businesses may want to:

  • Review transportation and fuel budgets.
  • Evaluate delivery routes for greater efficiency.
  • Update cash flow projections.
  • Consider the long-term impact of increasing operating expenses on pricing and profitability.

Even small increases in fuel costs can affect industries such as construction, landscaping, transportation, retail, home services, and any business that depends on regular travel.

Additional Vehicle Costs Also Increasing

The fuel tax increase is only one of several transportation-related changes taking effect on July 1. Various vehicle-related fees are also scheduled to increase, adding to the overall cost of vehicle ownership in Washington.

Motorists and businesses should be prepared for higher transportation expenses as these changes begin to take effect.
