Washington Income Tax Repeal Initiative Certified for November Ballot
Washington voters will have the opportunity this November to decide the future of the state’s newly enacted income tax on high-income households.
The Washington Secretary of State has officially certified Initiative IP26-645 for the November 2026 General Election after election officials confirmed the measure received enough valid signatures to qualify for the statewide ballot.
The initiative seeks to repeal the 9.9% tax on annual household income exceeding $1 million that was approved by the Washington State Legislature earlier in 2026. If approved by voters, the measure would eliminate the tax enacted during the 2026 legislative session.
Signature Verification Complete
Supporters of the initiative submitted more than 511,000 signatures to the Washington Secretary of State’s Office on July 2, 2026. Following a statistical review of the petition signatures, election officials determined that approximately 82.3% of the sampled signatures were valid.
To qualify for the November ballot, the campaign needed approximately 309,000 valid signatures. Based on the verification process, the initiative exceeded the number of valid signatures required for certification.
What Happens Next?
With certification complete, Initiative IP26-645 will appear on the November 2026 General Election ballot, giving Washington voters the opportunity to decide whether the state’s new income tax should remain in place or be repealed.
As Election Day approaches, voters can expect additional information through the state’s official voter pamphlet, public forums, and campaign efforts both supporting and opposing the measure.
What This Means for Washington Taxpayers
At this time, nothing changes for taxpayers. Certification of the initiative simply places the measure before voters in November. The current law remains in effect unless voters approve the repeal.
Because the outcome of the election could have significant implications for Washington’s tax landscape, taxpayers, business owners, and financial professionals should continue monitoring developments over the coming months.
